What is Likely to be Inherited?

Some traits are more often to be inherited than others.

Vision problems are often passed down through the generations.  Nearsightedness, color blindness, and lazy eye are common.  According to Parenting.com, if both parents are nearsighted then the child has a 25-50% chance of also being nearsighted.  Something that can be done to help these situations are to have regular eye exams.  This is something that is common in my family.  My great grandparents and grandparents both had eye problems, my mom is almost legally blind, so it is no surprise that 3 out of the 5 children have bad eye sight as well.

Migraines are also passed on.  If one parent has migraines then there is a 50% chance the child will also develop them.  A good way to counter the activation of migraines is to pay attenetion to what triggers them.  Once you have the triggers figured out then just do your best to keep it away from the child.

If one parent has allergies then there is a good chance that the child will also have them.  But, allergies develop in different ways so the allergies will not be the same necessarily.

Something that I hadn't really thought about is psychological and emotional issues can also be passed down through the family line.

When you have a child it is important to know what kinds of things could have been passed down so you can know what warning signs to look for.

  1. I like this post because many people don't think of how many things can be passed down through family generations. The part where you mentioned allergies I can relate to SO MUCH. My dad has terrible allergies, as does my mom, and I feel like I have allergies SO bad because of both of them. I also have bad eyesight like my mom, but my dad is in my 50s and has no problem with his eyes (crazy). Thank you for posting!

  2. I can relate to this post because of the vison problems in my family. My mother eyesight is not the best and that has passed down to my siblings and I because we all are vision impaired and need glasses/contacts.

  3. It's good to know what the most common things that can be passed down, are. I can totally relate to the eyesight thing, it makes a lot more sense why both of my parents have bad eyesight & how when me & my siblings got older, our eyesight worsened as well, I did not know how common that was! It's good to know these things so that you can tell your children.

  4. I liked reading this post. I like seeing what I inherited from my mom and what I got from my dad. That kind of stuff interest me. I think it is cool that now people can be mapped in a genome lab and they can see what can happen in years to come. My dad has had glasses since he was in grade school and my mom just recently started wearing the cheater glasses you can get at the drug store and I had to get glasses whenever I was in grade school.

  5. Hey Sydney! The stuff being inherited from my parents really interested me so I really enjoyed reading your blog. I can relate to the migraines being passed down because my mom gets them and i also get them. Both of my parents are allergic to animals, and so are my brothers and I. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I know allergies are passed down, because I have them due to my father. What i did not know is that migranes are passed down. I thought they were just something that occurs when a person is too overwhelmed or stressed out.

  7. I enjoyed reading your post and it really got me thinking about my family's medical history. I experienced my very first migraine when I was in fifth grade and it was terrible, after reading your blog post I can now thank my mother for that (LOL). But it was very interesting to read about all of the medical issues that can be passed down. Bad eye sight defiantly runs in my family and I'm sure that that is a good explanation as to why I wear glasses as well. Awesome post and thanks for sharing!

  8. I know something do get passed down from generation to generation. I have always thought about my family history , but there aren't really good chances of me having anything beside high blood pressure really , but not everyone have experience that within my family.

  10. Nice, sweet, and short post. You mentioned a lot of broad points, but included some interesting statistics. The only thing I noticed was, where is source once you stated the facts? I would like to read more about what is likely to be inherited because it is an interesting topic that is not talked about enough.

  11. This was very informative. I found the nearsighted part interesting because I am both near sighted and farsighted! The points you made were random, but thats what made them interesting! I also like your topic. Great job.
