Knowing your family health history should be something that you feel is necessary. Family history is anything that could affect your health conditions. Anything that you and members of your family have in common fall into this category. It is not just limited to gene related health issues but also exercise habits, eating habits, and living in the same environment.
According to the CDC, most people have at least one member of their family that has one chronic disease. If you have a relative with a chronic disease, you are much more likely to develop that disease yourself.
If you are aware of family health issues then you can talk to your doctor about it sooner to make sure everything is going well. It is important that you gather as much information about family members so that you can be as prepared as possible for anything that might be thrown at you.
Such an important topic!! Family health histories can literally give you a picture of what your future may look like! To know the information ahead of time gives people the heads up to go get tested or screened for things like cancer or heart issues. Definitely a great form of prevention. Nice post!
ReplyDeleteThis topic is very important, and many people do not know that you should learn your family health history. I wanted to know more about my family health history when I started attending doctors appointments alone and I did not know how to respond to the questions being asked. Being young adults we need to sit down with our parents and discuss family health history and more.
ReplyDeleteI know a little about my family, but not a lot. I know one important thing and that is heart disease runs in my family on my mother side and my father side. knowing your family history is important because it going to be a time when no one is there to tell it to but you. this is a nice topic and I'm looking forward for more.
ReplyDeleteFamily health history really is something of important knowledge. There are underlying issues that people might not know. My entire life I grew up knowing my great grandmother died of diabetes, come to find out that was incorrect, she actually died of breast cancer. It is good to know as much as you can so that you know what to look out for when it comes to yourself. The more you know, the better off you are.
ReplyDeleteKnowing your family's health history is important. I've always been aware of what goes on in my family with their health, so knowing that some families don't, is very strange to me. I would much rather want to prevent and start to understand something rather than be kept in the dark!
ReplyDeleteSydney,
ReplyDeleteFamily history is a scary subject for so many people. If you come from a family with chronic diseases, you deep down know you have a great chance of not only having it, but giving it to your children. It is knowing your death that scares me about family history. You damn near can predict what is going to happen and even though you can try to prevent it, it is inevitable for some people. What scares me the most is when it skips generations. I hate the unknown but knowing what could potentially kill me... :/ I think it is important to be aware though so you can do your very best to use methods of prevention and lower the risk of getting whatever disease it may be. Thank you for your post!
Great Post Sydney. I try to find out so much information about my families health history. High blood pressure runs in my family along with diabetes. Im always trying to find the best way to keep myself healthy, so that im not walking around with terrible health problems.
ReplyDeleteSydney, I for one think that knowing your family health history is SO important. I come from a family with a crazy amount of chronic illnesses, so I like to be prepared on what can happen to me or my family in the future. I know that for a lot of people, it can be scary to find out what may be in store for their health, but the only way that they can help that is if they stay prepared and know how to handle the disease or even how to prevent it. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteI never really thought much about my families health history until I had to become a grown up and start making my own doctors visits. I usually let my mom do all the talking when I would go to the doctor but now it is all up to me. It made me nervous investigating my families history but to my surprise we are pretty healthy and normal people!
ReplyDeleteI never really think that the things that happen to my family members can also happen to me. Cancer runs in my family and it's scary to think that I could get it someday.
